Teniola Apata Mon, professionally known as Teni is a Nigerian entertainer, singer and songwriter. Born December 23, 1993. She gained global prominence after releasing her hit song, “Case” which was produced by Jaysynths on October 19, 2018. During the 2019 Headies Award, the song won Best Pop single.
Early Life and Education
Teniola Apata is one of Nigeria’s fastest rising artists. She had an interest in music at a very age, at the age of two, she joined the school band. She has made several appearances and has performed on many stages both locally and internationally.
Teni was born on December 23, 1993 in Lagos State. Her elder sister Niniola, is also a Nigerian singer.
She attended Apata Memorial High School and later the University of Georgia, but finished at American InterContinental University where she obtained a degree in business administration.
Career Journey
Teni released her debut EP which she titled “Billionaire” in 2018, the EP met critical acclaim. The lead single which she titled “Case” was a hit and became one of the most streamed songs in Nigeria then. The song helped her to secure an award at the 2019 Headies Awards and she was nominated for “Best New Artist” during the MTV Africa Music Awards in 2019.
On 20 February 2019, Teni was featured on YouTube Music’s Trending Artist on the Rise. On 3 May 2019, she released the video for “Sugar Mummy”. On 14 June 2019, she released a new single titled “Power Rangers”.
In April 2020, Teni partnered with Nigerian Disk Jockey, DJ Neptune to release an EP called the “Quarantine Playlist”. She has since gone on to release two more successful EP’s – ‘Uyo Meyo’ in 2019 and ‘Wonderland’ in 2020. Her latest single ‘Uyo Meyo’ has become one of Nigeria’s biggest hits of 2020.
Endorsement
Teniola signed an endorsement deal with Tom Tom, a candy brand produced by Cadbury Nigeria, in March 2019. On October 6, 2020, PM News reported that Teni had signed an endorsement deal with Telecommunications Giant, Globacom Nigeria.
Awards
Teni has received several awards over the Years, during 2018 Headies Awards, Teni won Rookie of the Year and Most Promising Act to Watch at the 2018 Nigeria Entertainment Awards. She also won Best New Artist at the 2018 Soundcity MVP Awards Festival.
NotJustOk ranked her eighth on its list of the 10 Hottest Artists in Nigeria. She was listed on Premium Times’ list of the Six Nigerian breakout stars, viral sensations of 2018.
In October 2022, Teni was conferred a Nigerian National Award – Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) – by Nigeria’s former president Muhammadu Buhari. There was a controversy on social media about her approach to receiving the award.
